I-35 Undergoes Major Construction as Nearby Baylor University Reopens
The I-35 in Waco is undergoing major construction right near Baylor University. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), all lanes of University Parks Drive will be intermittently affected by the construction, the southbound overpass will be closed and reconstructed, multiple nearby streets will need to be repaved, and 4th Street is scheduled to close entirely in the near future.
Amid the chaotic construction project, Baylor University, which is immediately adjacent to the I-35, has reopened. With the overpass crosswalk being demolished as part of the highway’s expansion, students can no longer safely cross over the I-35. Instead, students and other pedestrians are redirected to cross under the freeway and through active construction zones.
Many students live in the apartment complex and housing tracts west of Baylor University, on the other side of the I-35. On a given day, hundreds of students could be forced to traverse the dangerous construction zones to get to their classes. Foot traffic will also likely balloon predictably during mealtimes, yet there has been no word from TxDOT about implementing additional pedestrian safety measures at peak hours.
Dangerous Conditions for Pedestrians & Drivers Alike
There are already chatter among students who walk or bike to and from Baylor University from the heart of Waco to the west about how unsafe they feel with the ongoing I-35 construction project. Of course, the demolition and reconstruction of the I-35 and many connecting streets have also caused chaos for motorists in the area. As drivers are forced to navigate detours and lane closures, the chances of causing a traffic collision or pedestrian accident will inherently increase. Everyone who travels through the area is advised to use extreme caution and to keep the number of a local personal injury law firm on hand.
